The Bible In Paintings 2 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR APPRECIATING AND APPLYING GOD'S MESSAGE |
J O S H U A CHAPTER 2 Joshua sent two spies. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house.” But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but the men left. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.)

She went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you, for THE LORD YOUR GOD IS GOD IN HEAVEN ABOVE AND ON THE EARTH BELOW. Now then, give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my [family] and that you will save us from death.”

“Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land.” So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall.

The men said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought all your family into your house.” “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

The two men came to Joshua and told him everything that had happened to them. They said to Joshua, “THE LORD HAS SURELY GIVEN THE WHOLE LAND INTO OUR HANDS; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

Good Morning, Dan! :-)
I really like the pen-and-ink #16. Also the Tissots.

And to you, Mary-Lou! I’m with you about Fortunino Matania’s #16. (What a name! I’m considering changing mine to Fortunino.)

Beautiful #16 by the Italian Fortunino Matania, who became well known for his war and historical scenes.
Tissot always and #33 by Shields who was greatly influenced by the work of Rossetti and other artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Shields made me work to imagine how scarlet is that rope.
And evidently Fortunino has won today's thread.

Yes, she was in the direct line to David and Jesus.
You beat me to it.
Thank you.

"Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab"
Matthew 1:5
Perhaps a hearty thanks is in order to Salmon, who somehow teamed up with--surely by marriage--with Rahab. And I wonder whether Rahab attended Boaz's wedding to Ruth and whether she held her grandson Obed (which we'll cover here in three weeks).
Is God ever laughing....

God gave Rahab a great opportunity; may we be as attentiveWell put, Leon. God gives everyone that opportunity, and it seems inescapable that He included her story so prominently to emphasize that and to encourage us similarly.

# 10 illustrates aptly, I think, the tight spot in which Rahab found herself. God knew the eventual outcome, but she certainly did not.

Nice selections.
Although it isn’t simple to create, I like #32 for its scene setting. And the only ‘color’ is the scarlet thread..
